FAQ

Do you have additional questions about Karimunjawa or our services? We’ve got the answers! Have a look at our collection of frequently asked questions below. If there’s something we missed, let us know.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT KARIMUNJAWA?

Karimunjawa is open year round to visitors, but some months are much more active than others. Dry season from April to October is the most popular time to visit because there is little to no rain. June, July, August and September are typically the busiest months. The weekends are usually the busiest as many locals also visit on the weekends. The island can also be enjoyed in the wet season, but be prepared to have some rain in between your planned activities. Wet season is quiet, but beautiful and green - it is perfect for more adventurous travelers!

IS THERE AN ATM ON THE ISLAND?

There are 2 ATM machines in town at the BRI bank, but we advise bringing cash with you to the island because the ATMs do occasionally have issues or are under maintenance.

HOW DO I GET TO JEPARA?

From Semarang

  • Minibuses are available to & from Semarang and Jepara every day. Minibusses are comfortable but affordable options. They are vans that seat 12-15 people and are often also used by locals. Our recommended minibus options are DayTrans, Kencana, or Alloy Travel - all of them are around Rp. 50,000/person for one way between Semarang and Jepara. They have offices in both cities where pick up and drop off take place. You can request pick up or drop off at your homestay, hotel, or harbor for an extra fee. You can book directly with them by phone, in their office, or online at easybook.com or other booking sites.

DO I NEED TO BOOK A PACKAGE OR HAVE TICKETS IN ADVANCE TO VISIT KARIMUNJAWA?

No you do not need a package or tickets in advance to visit. Karimunjawa is open to backpackers and tickets can be bought at the harbor office as well. In low season, you will likely find tickets at the harbor on the same day, except for on public holidays. In high season, we recommend booking tickets ahead of time as the boats can sell out quickly. Find more information on boat tickets here.

WHY DO I HAVE TO SEND A COPY OF MY PASSPORT, KTP, OR IDENTITY CARD TO BOOK BOAT TICKETS?

Harbor police are strict about passport and ticket control so they require identification to book tickets. The name on your fast boat ticket has to match your passport, KTP, or identity card. If this is not the same, you may end up paying extra money. They require this to prevent agencies from buying tickets with wrong names and to avoid black market tickets.
